About this skill

Workflow & requirements

Installed package paths (BB Skills adaptation, 2026-10-03)

Set BB_SKILL_DIR to the absolute directory containing this installed SKILL.md. For the default CLI destination, run export BB_SKILL_DIR="$PWD/.agents/skills/wp-block-themes" from your project root. If you chose another destination, assign that absolute folder instead. Keep the working directory at the WordPress project root when running the detector commands below; do not change into the skill directory. On PowerShell set $env:BB_SKILL_DIR and use $env:BB_SKILL_DIR in place of the Bash variable in command arguments.

Only helper command paths and this installation note are adapted. The unchanged original instructions are in upstream-original/SKILL.md; references, scripts and license notices retain their upstream bytes. These commands print inspection hints and do not run recommended build or database operations. Review the scripts before executing them.

WP Block Themes

When to use

Use this skill for block theme work such as:

  • editing theme.json (presets, settings, styles, per-block styles)
  • adding or changing templates (templates/*.html) and template parts (parts/*.html)
  • adding patterns (patterns/*.php) and controlling what appears in the inserter
  • adding style variations (styles/*.json)
  • debugging “styles not applying” / “editor doesn’t reflect theme.json”

Inputs required

  • Repo root and which theme is targeted (theme directory if multiple exist).
  • Target WordPress version range (theme.json version and features vary by core version).
  • Where the issue manifests: Site Editor, post editor, frontend, or all.

Procedure

0) Triage and locate block theme roots

  1. Run triage:
  2. node "$BB_SKILL_DIR/dependencies/wp-project-triage/scripts/detect_wp_project.mjs"
  3. Detect theme roots + key folders:
  4. node "$BB_SKILL_DIR/scripts/detect_block_themes.mjs"

If multiple themes exist, pick one and scope all changes to that theme root.

1) Create a new block theme (if needed)

If you are creating a new block theme from scratch (or converting a classic theme):

  • Prefer starting from a known-good scaffold (or exporting from a WP environment) rather than guessing file layout.
  • Be explicit about the minimum supported WordPress version because theme.json schema versions differ.

Read: - references/creating-new-block-theme.md

After creating the theme root, re-run detect_block_themes and continue below.

2) Confirm theme type and override expectations

  • Block theme indicators:
  • theme.json present
  • templates/ and/or parts/ present
  • Remember the style hierarchy:
  • core defaults → theme.json → child theme → user customizations
  • user customizations can make theme.json edits appear “ignored”

Read: - references/debugging.md (style hierarchy + fastest checks)

3) Make theme.json changes safely

Decide whether you are changing:

  • settings (what the UI allows): presets, typography scale, colors, layout, spacing
  • styles (how it looks by default): CSS-like rules for elements/blocks

Read: - references/theme-json.md

4) Templates and template parts

  • Templates live under templates/ and are HTML.
  • Template parts live under parts/ and must not be nested in subdirectories.

Read: - references/templates-and-parts.md

5) Patterns

Prefer filesystem patterns under patterns/ when you want theme-owned patterns.

Read: - references/patterns.md

6) Style variations

Style variations are JSON files under styles/. Note: once a user picks a style variation, that selection is stored in the DB, so changing the file may not “update what the user sees” automatically.

Read: - references/style-variations.md

Verification

  • Site Editor reflects changes where expected (Styles UI, templates, patterns).
  • Frontend renders with expected styles.
  • If styles aren’t changing, confirm whether user customizations override theme defaults.
  • Run the repo’s build/lint scripts if assets are involved (fonts, custom JS/CSS build).

Failure modes / debugging

Start with:

  • references/debugging.md

Common issues:

  • wrong theme root (editing an inactive theme)
  • user customizations override your defaults
  • invalid theme.json shape/typos prevent application
  • templates/parts in wrong folders (or nested parts)

Escalation

If upstream behavior is unclear, consult canonical docs:

  • Theme Handbook and Block Editor Handbook for theme.json, templates, patterns, and style variations.

Know what you need before installing

Source and packaging checks recorded on 2026-10-03. These notes are not safety certification or measured task performance.

Requirements

A local WordPress project, a reviewed Node.js installation and a compatible filesystem-based agent. Upstream declares WordPress 7.0+ and PHP 7.4.0+; verify actual version support. Set BB_SKILL_DIR to the absolute installed skill folder and run detectors from your project root. All six references, the theme detector, project-triage detector and its schema are included.

Costs, access & practical limits

The BB Skills adaptation changes only installed helper paths and adds installation guidance; unchanged upstream instructions are retained separately. Detector outputs are hints and may be incomplete or affected by traversal limits. The triage helper can miss a theme name inside a single-line comment; inspect unknown classifications manually. No WordPress server, PHP, WP-CLI, theme activation or hosted agent evaluation is provisioned. Review files before executing; avoid running on directories containing sensitive data.

  • Pinned upstream source and Git blob hashes verified
  • Applicable original license and notices preserved
  • Archive paths and metadata validated
  • Local Markdown and named reference files checked
  • Installed helper paths adapted; original instructions preserved

Installed Node helpers: six synthetic project layouts

Reported passed · v34da134e184e

View input and acceptance criteria

Input

Install the bound package into a custom temporary skill directory with spaces. Execute the documented Node helper paths while cwd remains a separate synthetic project. Check empty, multiline classic-theme header, inline theme header, block-theme, multiple-theme and malformed theme.json layouts. Use no credentials, WordPress runtime or user projects.

Acceptance criteria

All helper paths resolve and JSON parses. Multiline classic and block theme fixtures are classified; multiple-theme layouts are counted by the theme detector. The inline-header fixture is unknown in the upstream triage helper, a recorded limitation. Project contents remain unchanged. These are direct script checks only.

Recorded outcome

Direct Node.js helper checks on synthetic files; not a WordPress runtime or AI-agent evaluation
Mode: live CLI HTTPS install; custom destination with spaces, project cwd separate from installed skill directory.
{
  "empty": true,
  "classic": true,
  "inline-header": true,
  "block": true,
  "multiple": true,
  "malformed": true
}
No project files changed during helper runs.
Limitations: The upstream triage helper reports unknown for the inline comment theme-header fixture; use multiline headers and manually inspect unknown results. These are synthetic detector checks, not real theme activation, PHP/WP-CLI execution, traversal-limit coverage or an AI-agent evaluation.
